Reach Out and Touch the Rainbow

Stripes of color splashed across the sky
From which the last few drops of rain
Fall gently, pierced by the sun's rays
And I stand in awe at the beauty
The marvellous, symmetrical display of nature
My hands at my side or over my mouth
Admiring the splendor from afar
At a safe distance, untouchable by the vibrance
Never daring to reach out and touch the rainbow

My life passes by, idly drifting away
Storms rage and the sun shines
Beauty comes and beauty goes
Opportunity knocks and I answer the door
But am unsure if I'm willing to take a risk
I am quite comfortable here
Living life in my safe little havens of consistency
I enjoy life by proxy, through others
Never daring to reach out and touch the rainbow

One day I'll snap out of this lethargy
And see life with a startling clarity
I'll meet the challenges and embrace change
I'll acknowledge my strengths, every one
And accept my weaknesses and limitations
It will be my coming-of-age, a portal
From what I am to who I can be
On that day I'll be truly alive
And finally reach out and touch the rainbow
