Pretty Depressing Flowers.

A guy in my CW class said that there are generally two types of free verse: Look at the pretty flowers, and I'm so depressed. This is the result. To be read tongue-in-cheek.

Look at the pretty flowers!
The roses that caught their first breath of spring
And spread their petals for joy.
The tulips bending their stems like gymnasts,
Ever stretching towards the light.
The white skies of daisies
Sprinkled with galaxies of suns.
Gathered into a bouquet bursting with brilliant hues
But the tips have begun to turn brown
And the flowers are pulling their petals in
Hugging them close to the stems
Before they dry up and flutter to the ground
To be crushed underfoot and forgotten
A fading echo of the beauty of yesterday
Swallowed up in the silence of Death.
I'm so depressed.

It Could Storm

A pantoum is a rhyming poetic style that uses repeated lines. I tried it. I thought it turned out pretty well. :o)

It could storm tonight
I say softly, with dread.
The porch is filled with light
As clouds form overhead.

I say softly, with dread,
She just won't understand.
As clouds form overhead,
You softly touch my hand.

She just won't understand.
She never has before.
You softly touch my hand
As I reach for the door.

She never has before,
I say regretfully,
As I reach for the door.
Mom will say I'm silly.

I say regretfully,
She is probably right.
Mom will say I'm silly
For letting go tonight.

She is probably right
And we should not break up.
But letting go tonight
Proves that I am grown up.

We should not break up.
But I have to do this.
It proves I am grown up.
Love is not hit or miss.

And I have to do this.
You have said you agree.
Love is not hit or miss.
There's more for you and me.

You have said you agree.
A mutual consent.
There's more for you and me.
We don't need to repent.

I smile at you again.
The porch is filled with light.
I am glad you're my friend.
It could storm tonight.
